TAM, SAM, SOM Meaning: Breaking Down Market Sizing Terms Every Founder and Marketer Needs to Know

TAM, SAM, and SOM are abbreviations that appear in every startup pitch deck, business plan, and market entry analysis. The terms are widely used and frequently misunderstood. Getting their meanings precise is not a semantic exercise. It is a commercial necessity, because imprecise definitions produce market size calculations that either overstate the opportunity (destroying investor credibility) or understate it (underselling the business case).
TAM: Total Addressable Market
TAM means the total annual revenue opportunity if a business captured every potential customer in its target market, with no competition and no geographic or capability constraints.
The key word is total. TAM is the theoretical maximum, not the realistic target. It exists as a market sizing concept to communicate scale: how large is the pond? TAM answers this question without yet asking whether this particular fish can realistically swim in the whole pond.
SAM: Serviceable Available Market
SAM means the portion of TAM that is actually reachable with the current business model, product, distribution, and geographic footprint.
The key word is serviceable. SAM filters TAM by what the business can actually serve today. A national FMCG brand has a larger SAM than a regional one, even if both are in the same TAM. An e-commerce business has a different SAM than a retail distribution business in the same category, because their distribution reach defines different customer populations.
SAM is the commercially relevant market size for most near-to-medium term planning. It is the market within which the business is actually competing.
SOM: Serviceable Obtainable Market
SOM means the portion of SAM the business can realistically capture within a defined time horizon, accounting for competitive share, sales capacity, marketing reach, and realistic conversion rates.
The key word is obtainable. SOM is the honest market size: not what theoretically exists, not what is reachable, but what can actually be won given resources, competition, and time. SOM is the revenue target, not the market description.
Why the Distinctions Matter in Practice
A startup with a TAM of ₹5,000 crore that presents a SOM of ₹4,000 crore is either confused about the definitions or not being honest. SOM is always a small fraction of TAM.
A business that presents only TAM without SAM and SOM has answered the wrong question. Investors know the market is large (or they would not be meeting). What they need to know is how much of it is realistically capturable by this business with this team and this plan.
